Training Determination Guide

When is it time to train? When is it a training need and when is it something else? How do I know training is the answer? When really is training required? The Training Determination Guide1 can help you answer these questions and make your investment in training pay off.

Training is required when someone lacks a certain knowledge or skill. When there is a lack of knowledge or skill training is an appropriate and effective solution. In other situations, other solutions may be required.

The Training Determination Guide helps you assess a situation where there is a performance gap and to make an informed decision about the best corrective action. A performance gap occurs when what you expect is different from what actually is happening. Reasons for performance gaps vary. For this reason, time spent analyzing the situation before taking action will not only save time in the future but also will increase your confidence that the corrective action will work.
Answer ‘yes’ or ‘no' to the questions on the next page and discover what you can do if you are finding performance gaps.

Think about a specific performance concern you see and the circumstances surrounding that concern. Go through the steps of the Training Determination Guide and answer each question ‘yes’ or ‘no’ until you find the appropriate corrective action.
